I had some interesting experiences on ebay recently and thought of sharing them here. I have seen people on the forum jumping to attack anyone who has some positive OR negative story about ebay. So just wanted to clarify, I have been using ebay for around 10 years now and I had both positive and negative experiences but mostly positive. My sole aim in starting this post is to start a healthy discussion on things to be aware of.

1. Made a small purchase. Got 1 standard oz instead of 1 troy oz which I had expected. It was mentioned in fine lines. My mistake. Accepted it and moved on.

2. Bought 3 oz Kruggerands for $4800 when the spot price was in 1650-1680 range. Sounded a great deal. It was a buy it now price. Seller had good reputation and I was in any case protected under buyer protection. Turned out that the seller's account had been hacked and ebay deleted the listing. Had to open a case with ebay and waited around 10 days for my money to come back.

I kind of wondered that if ebay knew the account was hacked and they themselves deleted the posting, why did I have go through the whole process to get the money back. ANyways, no damage done in the end.

3. Bought a 5 gram PAMP gold bar for $200 (buy it now price). Gold was around 1650 and the bar was going for around 300 on ebay. I was expecting similar fate as my Kruggerands but I got the package and the bar inside it. Sealed with the number on bar and assay card matching. Doesn't seem anything wrong with it.

4. Bought a 1 oz PAMP gold bar for $1350 when gold was around 1580-1600. The price was $50 + $1300 shipping. Sounded weird but the seller said he had to put the cost in shipping as his seller limits were low. Took the bait. Got a prompt response saying that the package will be shipped next day. Got a tracking number next day which turned out to have been delivered 4 days BEFORE I bought the bar. I contacted the seller asking for correct tracking number, got no response. If the item has been delivered, will ebay release the fund? That was the question I had in my mind. So I promptly opened a case. Seller responded back saying that there had been a mistake and he gave me a new tracking number. The new tracking number turned out to be for something which was delivered somewhere else. Escalated the case to ebay and am waiting for their decision.

Apart from these cases, I have used ebay scores of times and had positive experiences, nothing to worry about. I am highlighting these four cases as they were out of ordinary. Again, I do not have beef with ebay. I still continue to use ebay but a little bit more cautiously.

I guess I have been lucky. Nothing bad on ebay since I signed on after the demise of Yahoo auctions.

There are some crooks on ebay, but I've never had a problem getting reimbursed when there was an issue. I've been buying/selling for years, and have never had an issue selling. I've had a few bad buying experiences, including receiving a fake and not receiving shipment of a few items. I've never had a problem getting my money back though.

The major fault I have with ebay is their apathy towards regulating these sellers. I've reported many members selling obviously counterfeit and/or misleading auctions and I'm not sure if any of them have ever been taken down or modified. It seems they're quite content allowing people to sell fakes. They'll reimburse those who figure it out and file a claim, but seem happy to take their cut of the sales from those who don't. Lincsus, I suspect this is why you had to go through the process for issue #2. I would love to hear someone refute this with evidence that ebay cares whatsoever about the integrity of their business.

@sdcrow---The open-ended challenge in your closing sentence is priceless. Humor of that quality rivals the best from Saturday Night Live
in the late 70's and the humor being contained within a serious statement makes it even better than their all-time best.

That is completely absurd. As I have demonstrated time and time again on this forum, I get items removed every single day using the link in my siggy. Usually within couple hours, a little longer on weekends and holidays.

How long ago did you buy this bar? Can you post pics?

It's a Buyer Beware world out there. A little common sense goes a long ways too.

Scubu, I'm glad you've had better luck than I have. I've never used the link you show in your signature. I've only ever reported items directly from the listings themselves. Do you know if there is a difference?

The only thing that is absurd is that they have done nothing in regards to the listings that I've reported. I've followed them very closely. My apologies for not following this forum for your successes when reporting items, but I have had no luck at all.

I'm by no means a big seller or buyer. I mostly use my account to buy coins. On the selling side my wife uses it mostly to sell books, but I've also resold some of my coins as well. The only bad experience I've had so far (knock on wood) was a book my wife sold to someone who informed us that the book we sent had bent and folded pages and was not brand new. We replied that it was stated in the listing as not new, but there were no bent or folded pages when we sent it. She demanded a refund and be allowed to keep the book as well or she would give us negative feedback. We knew it was extortion, but for a $5 paperback it wasn't worth the hassle. Since then I've learned how to add people to my blocked bidder's list, and I've learned about Toolhaus.org. Turns out this woman is a chronic purveyor of negative feedback, so onto the blocked list she went.

My wife also sells coupons for baby formula (which she keeps receiving from the manufacturers for some reason unknown to us). Right now we have someone that won our last listing who looks like they are also a chronic user of negative feedback (164 negatives according to ToolHaus), so I may have bad experience #2 on the way very shortly.

This may be a good place to ask this question. If you use a tool like ToolHaus.org and see that the current high bidder on one of your auctions is a chronic user of negative feedback, can you cancel their bid and add them to your blocked bidder list before they win the auction?

YeeHaa! Appears to be an ebay rip. That is a nice bar for far under melt value and as long as it's sealed tight, I wouldn't be worried.

Why someone would sell it half price is another matter. It was their loss and your gain.

I realize that this is an old thread, but I'm interested to hear how lincsus' ebay dispute (his experience #4) came out. In my experience, if the seller wasn't able to provide a tracking number snowing delivery to his address, he should get his money back.

The problems I have with ebay buyer was didn't pay for auctions they won and another was back out his biddings in the last minute auction ends. No harm done but I've put them in the blocked list. Not all buyers or sellers on ebay are bad. There are still million others are genuine ebay users. Usually I emailed first and no response after few days off to blocked list. Don't rely too much on ebay's customer service. They mostly computer generated not human edited. ebay can be the best place to sell or buy but we need to be cautious.

I did get my money back but it tool a long long time. After I was convinced that the seller is a total fraud, I escalated the issue to ebay with all the information. ebay is supposed to rule on the case within 3 days. But in my case, they did not do anything for a week. I was very frustrated as it was a very clear cut case of fraud and there were no complications. Finally called ebay (finding a phone number to call on ebay site is impossible) using a number on some blog. It took another couple of days after that for ebay to decide in my favor. Not very happy with the whole process.
