I found this Wheat penny and at first I thought it had been damaged after leaving the mint. It has an indentation that covers part of the date. But you can still see the date printed in the bottom so it must have been done at the mint.

I'll take a picture of the reverse tonight. The best I can remember it has a similar look but the indentation isn't nearly as deep.

It's all PMD. It didn't leave the mint this way.

If so how is the 54 still visible? If it was a cut the date would have been cut off. If it was stamped or pressed with something wouldn't the 54 be flattened out? It's still slightly raised. Maybe you're right but it didn't seem possible to me.
