This is about Canadian mint sets but can apply to US mint sets as well. Why are the individual coins worth more combined than what the set as a whole is worth?

Example: Canada 1992 PL mint set trends $20.00

Value for each individual coin in that set:

1c: $2.50

5c: $2.50

10c: $3.00

25c: $15.00

50C: $6.00

$1: $10.00

Total: $39.00

If I collect only canadian cents, I see no reason to spend the $20 on a whole set!

Your question just mormal but obvious. All coins are worth more individually than in a set of any kind. That is one of the reasons a collection in a Whitman or Dansco Album is sort of a waste for monitary purposes. Makes a nice collection but not monitarily smart. It is the same with anything actually. For example if you junk your car you get a few dollars for it but the junk yard sells each item and makes thousands on your car's parts. If you decided to build your own car you would find buying each item costly enough that the finished product would cost 10 times what you could have gotten from a car dealer. You could purchase wires, transitors, solder, boards, dials, lights, etc and build your own radio but a $20 radio would end up costing hundreds. The sum of the parts is almost always larger than the whole. Really makes little CENTS, HUH?

I have been working on assembling Canadian coin sets and I am finding its much cheaper for me to buy a mint set rather than purchasing each coin individually plus all the shipping fees on top of that. Why pay $15 for this quarter when you can buy the mint set for a few dollars more and get the rest of the coins with it?

The caribou quarter is the only one of the set that was only available in sets, therefore the higher price for that one.
