Should the bead size be obvious? I struggle to see the difference between the sizes and am trying to distinguish them on the 1965 penny.

No it is not obvious, you need to look closely at the A in Regina and see if it points at a bead or if it points between beads. That will tell you.. Well at least that is how I remember it.. why don't you search this forum for "1965 small large bead" topics, theres been plenty and you may find a few pics too. Good luck
