Today I purchased the last Half Dime obverse type I needed for my Liberty Seated type set. It is an NGC AU-58 1861 Legend obverse. There are five major obverse types for the Half Dimes, no stars, no drapery; with stars, no drapery; with stars and drapery; arrows at date; and legend on obverse.

The ultimate goal is an all AU type set of Liberty Seated coinage from Half Dimes through dollars.

Here they are in sequence by the types listed above

1837 No Stars, No Drapery at elbow AU-50

Half-Dimes-Milestone!

1838 Stars, No Drapery at elbow AU-50

Half-Dimes-Milestone!

1857 Stars, with Drapery at elbow AU-58

Half-Dimes-Milestone!

1854 Arrows at date AU-50

Half-Dimes-Milestone!

1861 Legend on obverse AU-58

Half-Dimes-Milestone!

Only two major reverse types for the Half Dimes, legend and no legend. That is if the mint mark below bow for 1870-72 isn't considered a major type. I have an 1855-O for my legend on reverse type and the mint mark is above the bow where it was located for most of the series and if I get an example of a mint mark below the bow then I can have the no legend on the reverse and a mint mark below the bow in one coin and that will let me use the money saved from having to have two without the legend on the reverse Half Dimes to put toward another coin in the series.

And one minor obv sub-type, 1859 stars with holes in them. A one year only.

Conder101, thank you for this tidbit of information.

The information in the Red Book about the transitional patterns of 1859-60 is misleading where it says that these pieces were not made for circulation. Given the Red Book listed them as patterns and I only collect regular issue coins I wasn't going to include them in my type set. Yet they did use the new die with the hollow stars for regular issue coins of 1859 so it is one I will include as it is within my means to acquire an example in AU.

Moe145, it is a set that is attainable but due to the number of coins and grades wanted it will take some time.
Similar to filling a 7070 type set album. The only really challenging coin will be the 1839 No Drapery half dollar which is the only type that is priced over $1,500.00, everything else that is priced up to $1,500.00 can be acquired via 60 - 90 day lay-aways through dealers I buy from regularly.
