Found this 1897 Indian cent. While looking at the neck for the Misplaced Date 1 in Neck Variety, I noticed what looks like part of an 8 or the upper loop of the 9 protruding from the indians neck. Is this a known variety? Or is it not a variety at all?
It has to be that or she has a gnarly Adam's Apple. Hopefully an expert will see your post. I've studied many a picture of misplaced hey that doesn't belong there things. Good luck, I'll keep watch.
To me, it looks lie a clash mark, but if the die is not rotated, then there is nothing in the field to clash with liberty's neck. Can't really tell with the picture, could be PMD or maybe lamination. Pretty confident that is not a digit.
It does look like the 9. Not sure if it's a new error or just PMD. But nothing about the anomaly makes me think it is damage. If there are 4 known MPD varieties for the 1897 Indian cent, Could it be possible there is a 5th?
My unprofessional opinion is that it is not a new variety. What you are pointing out in your photo is quite obvious, and if it is a MPD I would think that it would have been discovered before. However, if you still have suspicions I suppose you could have Richard Snow look at it.
Yeah, it would be impossible to know for sure what is going on unless one had it in hand to view. It is shaped like a digit, but doesn't appear large enough. If you really feel that it is a digit, send it to Rick Snow.
