I wouldn't say bidding early is wrong - you just didn't bid enough :). I think last minute sniping works if you are messing around with low values - where another bidder might be prepared to go a pound or two more just to see, but when you get to high values or popular coins it's almost certain others will have snipes ready to go so it really is all down to how much you are parpared to bid.

I bid on many many ancients on ebay. With a few very rare exceptions if I 'win' more than 5% of my items I know that I am doing something wrong. Such is the 'price' of being a cheapskate. Zeus has decreed that "We must suffer unto wisdom" ('The Agamemnon' by Aeschylus)

I wait until something new is listed under the Buy It Now heading. That's the only way I usually win.

I'm amazed, I thought you were all armchair snipers hunting the mis-spelt, mis-attributed, wrongly categorized, poorly pictured deers of ebay. Must just be me

Two things I learned. I learned what a good looking roman ancient supposed to look like and the ballpark price. Second thing I learned is to bid properly on ebay next time. I didnt feel like I lost actually. :)
