This penny came out of a 1973 double dollar specimen set (lucky find of large bust). Unfortunately all coins had these white spots on the reverse. The strangest part is the penny, it almost looks like the surface has been lacquered, but I can't imagine why you would do that, leave the large bust quarter and sell for $25... especially from a coin shop.

The reverse surface is kind of a shiny brown color with the appearance of blue and/or red depending on the light. The OBV is a a beautiful specimen surface, with what looks like the beginning of the lacquer appearance on some parts.

So my questions are;
1. What are the white spots?
2. Is this brown lacquer type stuff a reaction to the glue in the packaging or did someone really try to lacquer the coin?

All specimen 1-cent coins from the 1973 sets (both the double cent and double dollar prestige set) came from the mint lightly lacquered. What you are looking at is the result of a red, fuzzy velvet case, plus 30+ years of storage with humidity.

It took me FOREVER (well, 8 years) to find a bright red specimen cent with a heavy cameo finish - I found one whereby a collector had removed the coins from the set a long time ago, and put it into a plastic capital holder.

That said, if you get the right storage conditions, you can get some fantastic toned specimen cents from the early 1970s. Like this pink-toned beauty...

Thanks SPP-Ottawa, very interesting to know and will start my hunt, as it might take awhile. I wish I could capture the color in the light.
