Trying to grade my new acquisitions, I still feel uncertain with US coins I don't know well. I would say the 1899O should be a very small VF while the 1903 is probably only a VG?
Yes, Liberty shows fairly clearly on the 1899, I'd call it net F+ for the scratches. The 1903 also appears a little scratched and dented, but I'd call it VG details. Nice coins.
I can only go a F on the 1899-O, Liberty should really be stronger for a VF. The scratches and dark color bring that down to a net VG in my book. I can only go G on the 1903. There should be three letters of Liberty showing to get a VG.
maudry- Two good books for grading US coins are American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States coins and Photograde: Official Photographic Grading Guide for United States coins
