I'm sorry if this is in the wrong spot, I saw an earlier post where an encapsulated coin had started to tone and it was posted here.

I'm new to collecting encapsulated coins from the RCM. I'm collecting a few series in memory of my Dad who also collected -

I won this auction for the 2011 Wild Rose Coin off ebay, the seller simply said it was stunning and showed photos of the encapsulated coin.

Yesterday I picked it up at the post office, carefully took it out of the clamshell case (not how I first tried in the vid with one hand) and right away had issues with the coin. (Other than the black sleeve missing) I decided to make a video, here it is:

I've been told one needs a flat end screwdriver or needs to twist to open a capsule? Has anyone done so before and would a lid just become loose in the mail?

You think it's a coincidence the little black spot looks like a 7?

Is that tarnish or toning?

The reason for my video and posting is that the seller says he is confused, that he just recently got this from the RCM and it should be in pristine shape, so I'm worried he will think I tampered with it.. though I think that tarnish or toning would take longer to appear than the less than a day I've had it.

Thank you!

You are in the right spot. Looks like tarnish/toning (same thing) to me.

My guess it has been taken out of the capsule and has come in contact with something - handled with fingers maybe on the edge?

It wouldn't be something that you would have caused and the seller should be willing to take it back and issue a refund if it was not so described.

This coin is fairly widely available so you shouldn't have much difficulty obtaining a "problem free" coin.

Thank you BiBo,

Thank you canuck1us -the seller has agreed, I need to pay for shipping it back :/ Part of my concern was his reply back about it being perfect right from the mint and my worry he may think I did something to it. I still am unsure how easy a RCM lid is to pop up? Does sonically sealed mean there is a vacuum?

Some of them aren't too difficult to open but usually sealed tight enough that shipping wouldn't jar it open - especially if it was never opened before.

A screwdriver blade would be too thick - a thin knife blade would be more appropriate to use to get it started to pop it open.

It's just a dirty or tarnished coin. The seller should have been up front about that or maybe he/she didn't look at it.
