The US Mint in San Francisco is not open to the public because it is also a bullion depository. None of the US Mint bullion depositories (West Point, Ft. Knox, and San Fran) are open to the public. The Granite Lady (original SF Mint) is not currently open to the public either. The city of SF is converting it into a history museum and it needs many upgrades to meet current building codes before it can reopen. Remember the San Fran commems minted last year? That was a fund raising effort for the rehab.

I visited the Granite Lady back in 1988, took the tour, viewed the exhibits and struck my own souvenir medal.

True but the Granite Lady is NOT the original SF mint. It is the second SF mint which opened in 1874 and closed in 1937.

Who knows, once they open the Granite Lady as a museum, I wouldn't be surprised if the mint opens up a kiosk in the lobby.

It will probably be quite some time. They just got the go ahead to come up with the plans last year, they just got the coins to sell last year for fund raising, they haven't received those funds yet, the cost of the renovations will be A LOT more than the funds reased by the coins so they will have a lot more fundraising they will have to do, and finally they still have to DO the extensive renovations. I think if we are lucky we will see it in about four to five years.
