I know it's hard to tell from photos, but I have the opportunity to purchase this $5 gold piece and this is what the seller sent me. I'm thinking VF30-VF35 would be a fairly safe grade based on the photos. Obviously I will be inspecting it in person before agreeing to purchase.
Thoughts, opinions, pointers on what to look for on these? Thanks again in advance...

The coin is easily choice very fine and might make XF. Circulated common dates such as this 1880 trade at melt value plus a small numismatic premium. The biggest concern is authenticity and that coin appears genuine.

Try to find one with minimal contact marks and good color. The pictured example looks pretty good to me.

Well I jumped on the opportunity, got it for a very low premium over melt. Here are scans:

The coin looks good. I think it would grade EF-40.
