The other day I found what looks to be like a proof 1994-S Washington quarter in my pocket change. It has the "S" san francisco mintmark, mirrored background and frosted images(that are now scratched!) My question is how can I tell if it is a silver one or if it is just a clad proof? I wanted to post pics, but my camera doesn't take pictures of small objects very well, they are out of focus or too reflective to see anything.

Look at the edge. Clad will show a copper ring.

You can also do the tissue test.

If it has an S mint mark it is a proof.

If it is 1992 or later it COULD be silver.

As jbuck said you would have to check the rim or you could drop it on a solid surface and compare the ring to that of a known clad quarter.

Thank you. The tissue test looked like silver, but there was a copper ring on the edge. Still not a bad find for pocket change.

I like to do the tissue test with three coins: the unknown, a known silver, and a known clad. Proofs may fool you with their reflectivity. That being said, if you are testing a proof, make sure all three are proof.
