I have a 2000/1995/1988 that look liked pennies I found in a 5cent roll I purchased at a bank recently and curious what would make them a brown color ?

Your coins are cupro-nickel.Unlike the earlier pure nickel,or later nickel-plated coins,they tone quite readily.There are also cupro nickel coins with an improperly mixed alloy.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Contact SPP-Ottawa, I believe he's doing some research on brown nickels. He has a machine that can tell you the exact composition.
