In 1981 we bought for investment a 22ct gold proof £2 piece to commemorate the wedding of Prince Charles & Lady Diana. Limited to 5000 pieces. Isle of Man issue. Pobjoy mint.

We cannot find any information about it or its value.

Can anyone help.

Thank you for your reply. Yes we think this is the same coin. Is it only worth its melt down value because I thought it would be worth more to a collector. Your views on this would be appreciated. What would be my best method of selling it.

You probably need to do some google searches and see if any have sold previously at auction etc, don't forget to search ebay.

If it was me I would put on ebay (when it's free) with an opening bid of scrap value and see what happens.

IMO the sharp rise in the gold price has impacted the 'added' collectable value of this type of coin.

However, on the bright side... 1981 gold price $400-$600 oz, today $1604 oz...

Private mints produce coins that are of dubious value to say the least. The Royal Mint produces some pretty spurious "collectables" on a regular basis but at least they're the official mint of this country and all of their products have a degree of recognition.

That said, a gold coin will always be prized for its melt value if nothing else.
