I always thought that the large Irish penny was one of the prettiest coins in design.

Of course the mintages seem to often be the highest for the first years, the obvious reason being you need a lot of coins to go round and then you just need replacements for the ones lost and to increase the numbers once circulation of the new coin has been taken up by the populace.

That coin is a very nice grade, I have one from later but it doesn't look good.
Yes the lyre and the bird are quite artistic designs and the gaelic letters enhance the effect. Compare this pretty penny with the modern, GB design with the portcullis!!

i would love to get one of those 'chickless' pennies, cant remember what years they were out, 1942, I think there was another year, maybe I'm wrong.

basically the lower body and legs were missing from one of the chicks.

nice one josie!! iv always loved to have one! 'in coin tray' sounds like it didnt cost you an awful lot?
i wouldnt be surprised, sometimes they can be difficult to spot, esp if the coin is in low grade.

I got it in dublin coin shop.

Go there to find coins that I dont have, but key dates are expensive also depends on its grade.
