So, FVRIVS RVFVS has kindly sent me a parcel which contains some big ol' early empire bronze which brings me to emperor 50!

This contains some great stuff - an Elagabalus upgrade which is in pretty good shape - my first identifiable Commodus which has been ravaged by bronze disease - a nice looking caracalla - an augustus postumus issue, perhaps PROVIDENT (this one was issued by Tiberius though - so its another tick as far as my goals are concerned) and a pretty nicely worn Titus.

And for these last two id like to put a seperate bit on each

Firstly - Germanicus! This is Germanicus and a Large S C on the reverse - this guy was very highly reknowned as a general but never got to be emperor (poor guy).

Secondly - 3 new faces on one coin! This is a sestertius of Claudius I - very badly beaten and probably on its way to falling apart. Secondly - this is a reverse I've wanted for a while - because it has both Julius Caesar and Augustus on the reverse. And the word COLA written down the side is a bonus. It shows two statues from Rome in which Julius Caesar (Well, DIVVS IVLIVS here) is crowning Augustus. Its survived alright - you can see both figures and their heads so its a definite box tick right there!

Heres Germanicus and Claudius...and Augustus and Julius Caesar:

Low grade coins but very nice. Some of those emperors I don't have just yet. Congratulations!

Not sure if this was a buy/trade or sell. Still a nice package from FVRIVS.
There is a lot of good in Worcester. In all respect.

It was sort of a 'gift'. I told Ben that I put a low value on these and whatever/whenever he chooses he can throw something back across the 'pond'. He certainly gets more thrill out of them than I ever did ! That alone makes it worth it to me.

I really like buying coins in this condition totally unattributed, they cost less to buy.
Then the fun starts, trying to find all you can about them.
I have all of Sear's books on ancient coins: Republican, Empire, Greek, Roman Colonial and Byzantine, plus a full set of RIC.
Helping out at the keyboard are VCoins and Wildwinds. Not the least, and very far from the last, there is always the CCF!

If I still cannot attribute after a year or so, I will concede, and take the subject coin to a couple of good friends of mine, each of whom have been professional dealers of ancient coins for more than three decades. One of these guys has helped to build, and regularly uses one of the top ten numismatic reference libraries in the World, for auction lot description at Noble Numismatics in Sydney.

Noble's reference library, I would imagine, would be on a par with that at Heritage.

Much more difficult trying to attribute some of these from screen images only. Quite often, they need examination under under a loupe, looking at them from different light angles, just like trying the examining the internal flaws in an expensive faceted gemstone. For me I may be temporarily defeated, and it could take months or more before it finally dawns on me what I am looking at.

Give up? NEVER!

The commodus has come out nicely with a coat of wax - its going to display.

The Claudius with Aug and Caes turns out to be quite nice - it appears to be coated with rust though. The BD is under control but the coin - especially around the eye - is pretty unstable. I managed to remove some rust with a thick brush but I'm worried about damage to the coin so its going into a super long term oil bath (about a year should do I think).

And let me tell you - the germanicus is looking good. A lovely mottled turquoise colour. Also going on display as a colourful addition.

I am glad that you found something to interest you ! Yesterday I finally decided to sort through some of the 'junk' I accumulated last year (500 old postcards). One autographed Jack Dempsey postcard (its real) and two cards of "The Great White Hope" ! Actually 2 different men who fought the great Jack Johnson in title fights one hundred years ago. One the previously undefeated Champion got his clock cleaned and the other who finally defeated Johnson in 26 rounds. Should bring enough $ for me to buy something made in bronze !

Well that does depend. The autographed one is in fact 'unposted' with a brief message and signed at the end "Jack Dempsey". I suppose someone had looked at the front (picture of Dempsey) saw the message and assumed 'used' without bothering to actually read it. Not worth a hundred (he signed thousands of them at his NY restaurant) but the chumps on ebay are all asking beeg bucks. So am I ..... $9.99 start. I buy them cheap(.50-1.00) in large albums with the hope that I can net $2 ea. Sometimes I get lucky and find something better. If I can buy 2 sestertii with the profits I am happier than when I started !
