I can't believe first post went into space. Anyway going through some old ICCS flips and came across a couple au58. Question is what points on the different monarchs do you look for first signs of wear.

As an encompassing rule of thumb, the eyebrow is a great indicator of first wear for all Canadian coins.Though not a high point breaks in the luster is also a first indicator of wear.

The area above the ear/temple is mostly where you should look first. Either the band of the crown or the hair above the ear.

Very slight traces of wear gives you : On 1858 -- AU 55 1870-1901 - AU 58 1902 1910 - AU 58 1911 1936 - AU 55 1937 1952 - AU 55 1953 1964 -AU 55-- 1964 onwards, wear patterns too early yet to be a factor. Per charlton ed. 63

Thanks guys, it is the one area I still find difficult in grading I understand luster, bag marks, strike. I have numerous pre 67 elizabeth and uncrowned george halves and silver dollars most look uncirculated. Can A weak strike appear as a bit of rub. Wow SPP that book is pricey, I have the PCGS grading guide which is helpful but only applies to US coinage.

Yes, if you are patient enough, you should be able to find it for under $30 at most places. B&W Coins in Brampton sells them at issue price. http://www.bwcoin.com
