Hi all,

I'm looking for a little help determining whether two 1943-44 French-Indo China Taels I have are authentic and if so what they could be expected to be graded.

A little background, one of the Taels I got from my grandfather's coin collection (he was from Thailand and had a large amount of coins from all over Asia). The other I recently purchased on ebay.

The pictures below are labeled with each.

Additionally, my grandfather's coin is 37.61g and the ebay one is 36.53. Both were weighed on my cheap digital scale. As I understand this coin should be weighing 38g. The ebay coin is slightly wider (41mm) v. my grandfather's coin (40mm). Also my grandfather's coin is slightly thicker.

I've heard these coins have been counterfeited so I'd like to verify the authenticity (especially of the ebay one, so I can get my money back if need be) and get an idea of a grade.

My question to anyone that can help is first are both real, both fake, one real, one fake? If there is any other info I can provide, please let me know!

Thanks in advance!

As a followup to this, I sent the ebay coin to NGC. It came back as counterfeit. Now I'm curious about the other one.

leadenhall: It's good to see that you have a healthy suspicion of these.
I don't know anything worthwhile about this series to pick a fake, but I would sure like to include a genuine example in my collection.

Fortunately, I have a good relations with one of the leading dealers in Australia, who has access to one of the top ten numismatic reference libraries in the World, literally, thousands of books in it. Perhaps some others in the CCF may know of this library.

I consider myself to be in the very fortunate position to do due diligence regarding authenticity, if such a piece were to come my way.

From the minuscule expertise I have in this series (I mean next to nothing), the piece illustrated looks OK to me, but if I were to consider buying a similar piece, at the very least, I would have it weighed and comparatative ring tone test done. Unfortunately, a similar genuine coin against which it could be compared, most probably would not be available.

seI_69|: I totally agree about the due diligence. For the ebay coin, I should be able to get my money back fortunately. Next time I'll definitely get some additional weights and measures.

I'm very curious on the other coin, my grandfather's. He was from Thailand and left me a collection of hundreds of silver coins from all over Asia. This was one of them so considering the source I believe it to be real. One of these days I'll send it in. Will follow up here when I do and will hopefully have an authentic coin to base off of.

Also, this library you speak of sounds impressive. Very nice to have a resource such as that available!

The library mentioned has been built up over about 40 or so years, and belongs to what is arguably Australia's leading numismatic auctioneer.
