I have some toned coins that the stage of toning, is not the attractive variety. An example would be darkish brown on edges, almost a nicotine type color. I find it detracts from the coin. I'm wondering if there's a chance for it to either spread or change to a nicer shade? It's in a 1995 birds of Canada silver fifty cent piece and a 1984 silver dollar. Sorry no pics, I suck at uploading.
I'm also curious if this will affect the selling price negatively? The toning is on outer edge, only 1 side and half way around. All I put is welcome. Rox

I have heard that unattrcative "tone" is called "tarnish".

I am sure that I am plagiarizing someone.

I think that once it hits a darker brown black it's done for. No colors will come. Might be best to keep it like that instead of taking the tarnish off.

suffocate the coin in an air tight plastic holder and put that in a small plastic zip bag you might get lucky in the future. I have heard if you store them in manilla envelopes the coin may tone quite nicely but I am unsure how the chemicals in the envelope will effect the coin.
