Tracking. Tracing. Knowing where the money is and where it was. It also helps thwart counterfeiting, since the numbers should not be duplicated.

It's always a bad sign when you are in business and you get the same serial number 3 times in one day.

serial numbers add an entire dimension to collecting and who doesn't love fancy serials, low serials, and high serials. Goldenchest, It's only a beautiful day when they are all 2 digit low serials of different series too!

I must politely disagree. If they are all they same serial, denomination, block and all, any collector of notes, weather a noob, rookie, intermediate, perhaps even expert collectors, would have a beautiful amount of satisfaction receiving such a set in one day. If they proved to be genuine. Such is my belief. Not to say your scenario is not beautiful as well. And better too!

Goldenchest I totally agree with you, I was only joking on my last remark. Even if they were different denomination and a non-fancy serial number, I'd still be excited to see the same number on two notes. These days I never see anything interesting through all the notes that come my way at work. Even a wrinkly old 1957 $1 S.C. would make my day!

Serial numbers were originally introduced to help track how many notes were being issued, and they still serve this purpose. It also allowed them to "cross off" particular notes from their books once they were redeemed and returned, allowing them to track how many notes were still outstanding.
Other uses for the numbers have been found. Bank tellers find them useful when dispensing money from bundles of freshly-printed notes. And, as others above have stated, it allows the authorities to advertise the fakeness of particular serial numbers a counterfeiter has chosen to copy, since counterfeiters rarely go to the trouble of making fake notes with lots of different serial numbers.

When I was managing a coffee shop I had a 1935 SC star note come through my tip jar. Great day!
