Here's an 86 shield with rays I'm looking at. I think it could be AU50 or 55. Can I get some comments on it.

It looks MS to me. very strong shield lines and the stars are very well defined, I see no weak spots on the coin.
My only question would be if it has any luster? Hard to tell from the photo, but with the strong details of the coin I would expect some luster would remain.
a beauty!

I'm pretty sure I'm seeing some wear on the shield.
AU53-55, but only if it has the required luster.
Rest in Peace

If this is a scan the surfaces are probably ok, If it's a photograph I would pass. It's been dipped too many times.

many of the shields have week striking across the shield that appears to be wear. I have viewed many certified shields and a high percentage of AU and even MS examples are this way. I posted another example slabbed by NGC as AU55. you can see the surfaces are very similar and also notice the shield strike. I'm really leaning to AU55 on this one..any comments?

I see very little if any wear. It could possibly grade AU-55/58 and maybe MS. I am just having a little trouble getting a read on the luster which for me is an important aspect in separating high AU's from MS since they both basically have the same amount of details. Nice coin BTW!

the more I look at this, the more I'm thinking this could be AU58. Look at the leaves in mine. much stronger than the AU55 NGC example. until I had the coin in hand, I would not put it any higher though

muted luster will hold this back to AU

if those are not scans and its dipped that much, its a details grade anyway and 55 or 58 don't even apply
I would pass on this coin if its dipped
