Hi all, a friend of mine showed me this piece and I have no idea what it is. The initials are J A C, 12 or 21 horizontally and the year 1818. It is 99% copper, approximately 19mm in diameter and is quite thick. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

I believe it's a Texas jola of Jose Antonio de la Garza (J A G) in the value of a half real (1/2 above the date).

Here's another jola of de la Garza, the first person to coin money in Texas, with a nice, exhaustive Heritage Auctions write-up:

Of course, such a seminal issue of coins for Texans and Tejanos, begs the question of how many counterfeits are out there...

Thank you philadelphian for the info and link. It definitely needs to be submitted to a grading service for authentication. It is an older piece and even if it were not an original I would think it still would have some value.

That my Amigo is a "fake". I've personally handled and seen the real ones at our coin club meeting in SATX and our local (Frost Bank) bank's display. though I will not deter anyone from submitting, I might give some heads up on that one.

It is cool even though I do not think it matches the fabric and style of the example in RedBook or the link above.
