I've been trying to convince myself the two pellets that can be seen in the remains of the center device on the first pic are part of the standard design of the chateau tournois, but I'm having a hard time. The legend on the side with the central cross should indicate the magnate for whom this coin was made. What we can see, from 6 o'clock to 8 o'clock, is a very clear N and a T. And importantly, they are huge, and widely spaced. I don't think NT can be part of the name or title of the French rulers who made the regal denier tournois of the period, so, like the Crusader coinage, this is someone else's coin imitating the style. That person must have a very short name. Take a look at this dinero of Alfonso VI of Castile, with the legend ANFVS REX; the F in these coins seems to often be a T, modified with a small extra crossbar off the upright: http://www.numisjoya.com/Catalogos/...191208/4.jpg
I don't have any references that go back that far. The cross desogn is similar to alot of coins particularly Metz Alsace Lorraine, but I cant match the other side.
