this thing http://www.ebay.com/itm/Us-Territor...251253409412 just doesn't look right to me. I have never heard of a $20.00 territory gold piece and if they exist that may be why it looks so weird to me but this thing sure does look fake to me

They exist. I've never seen that exact one, and I've never held one in hand, I can't say if its real or not but the design matches a few with different wording. There's a whole section in the Red Book deticated to "private and territorial gold" in the back and there's a few $20's in there that are identical to the one on ebay... except... every one of them says- " San Francisco California", "SMV California gold" (or something else regarding a private company/state) where the one listed reads "United States of America".. But I doubt they show all the known examples in the Red Book, though I could be wrong..

Here's a quick photo with my phone of one of the $20's from the book.. Probably hard to compare in the photo but just for a general idea and so you can see a real one.

The coin could have circulated in the territories and the newly formed state of California and was very likely struck from California gold but it would not be considered territorial/private issue gold though real ones do exist of this denomination. It look like a regular double eagle to me.

I agree.. I can't find a private territories $20 that says "United States of America" in my quick search.. It looks like a regular double eagle. If its real or not I cannot tell, nothing stood out when I looked at it though..

I don't see anything that would make me suspicious but the pictures are not the best for authentication and the surfaces may not be original which makes it even more challenging.
