It would have had significance to the person that did the engraving: somebody named JHS loved somebody named EOD. But if it isn't a family heirloom and you know you had ancestors with those initials, then it's pretty much impossible to figure out who those people were.

well can be too many things but here is one where the 2 abbreviations had relation (in religion) ...
Eastern Orthodox Bible (EOB) , JHS from greek "Iesous Hominum Salvator" -- "Jesus, savior of man,"
