Was searching through a batch or wheat pennies I hvae and found this 1953 that looked strange. Not sure its a mechanical error as none of the other numbers seem to be destorted. What your thoughts on this one. Picture is about the best I can get from the angle.

Hi OrDirtDevil

I was just thinking about you !! Nice to see you !!

The 3 looks to me like it was struck from a badly worn die . I have seen a number of wheaties that look similar.

I too have run into a lot of these cents and have always put them aside. Thanks for your inquiry or dirtdevil because it's answered this for me also. And thanks for your reply Metalman because now I know too!

Are these also common in pre-65 nickels too?

It is Machine Doubling (MDD) but not very dramatic. It is very common especially in the 1950's Wheat Cents.

Thnaks Metal, the 3 was so far over with done of the other numbers effected I figured it was from die polishing or over grinding the 3.
