Hello.

First off I'm new to the site (this week) and hobby (2 months).

I started the hobby with CRH and now I am wanting to get a nice proof set collection going.

I've read countless times already that I should read first and buy second. Agreed.

I want to read more about proof coins thus I have purchased: A Guide Book of United States Proof Sets 2nd Edition from Amazon today.

Question is: Are there any other books (preferably made within the last decade) out there that are proof set specific? I didn't see any other obvious entries on Amazon and Google didn't turn up much either.

There are many books out there that reference proof sets, but I am looking for a 100% dedicated or at least 50% dedicated proof set book(s)....
Or maybe I should be looking for an encyclopedia type book that has a great section on proofs? You tell me.

Thanks for the input.

I have introduced a nephew to coin collecting. I found the book
"Warman's U.S. Coin Collecting" by Alan Herbert a great resource for collecting. It's an easy-to-Understand book that provides very good advice for coin collections. It includes information useful if you want to collect proofs.

If you plan to collect only the more modern US Mint proof sets, the Guide Book that you've already purchased is about as good as you're going to get â€" it has the most information on these newer sets.

If, however, you plan to venture further back into earlier US proof coins and sets, I would suggest that you locate a copy of Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Proof Coins. It is the standard reference work on these coins. You can review its contents online here: http://www.pcgs.com/books/breen-proofs/

Thanks for the replies. Both are reasonably priced and I will be getting them soon.

Also found this book for sale at a local show last week:

I didn't purchase it at the show since the dealer was asking more than the $30 it is listed for in the above link.
What I did notice was that it had nice pictures of packing materials and the actual proof sets. Pictures were bigger than the RedBook.
