Hello all!

I am visiting New York (Manhattan) for other stuff, but I decided that while I was here I could check out some proper dedicated coin shops. Trouble is, I've now checked out 3 shops off of yelp/google maps, and one of them simply didn't exist any more, one of them was closed because the owner passed away, and one of them (actually a hobby shop) no longer had coins- so I figured I should do some research first.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm mostly interested in world coins, and maybe some coin supplies, so pawnshops or those shops which deal with expensive or rare coins, or shops that deal solely with american coinage (especially those that haven't been circulating in a century or something) wouldn't be so useful for me.

Thanks in advance!

I am going to repeat my post from that other thread:

Quote:

The most interesting coin store in Manhattan that I found is Paul Bosco's shop: 149 Madison Avenue on 32nd St, just east of Madison New York, NY 10016. All the other shops mentioned are good standard shops but a little boring . But Paul's shop is a wonderfully disorganized shop, But Paul seems to be able to find his way around every thing. He has a storage area above the shop so if there is anything specific your looking for ask him. Here is a link to his website:

Stacks and all the well known dealers were clean clinical and only interested in dealing with >US$1000.00 coins. I felt very awkward and unwelcome in them, their staff were most definitely employees not collectors!!

Pauls shop on the other hand was interesting and Paul himself is quite a character. I ended up a few months later contacting him and purchased a Mining Thaler He had shown me for US$1500.

Thanks for the advice, and the older links! I guess I should've searched first!

Although I don't plan on spending hundreds of dollars (or even a hundred dollars), I am hoping for cheap recent currency!

Checkout Stacks - some super nice stuff - even if it is a little out of my price range...

MY recommendation was based on the fact the shop(Paul Bosco) generally has cheaper more interesting choices. My comment about the expensive purchase was made as I found other larger operators ( particularly Stacks) unfriendly and the counter staff not really enthusiastic about coins. Although I could have spent at the level they preferred it was the enthusiasts shop that gained my custom in the end.

Thanks again for the advice! I hunted down the Paul Bosco shop on Friday, but it was closed...should've called first. Will try again tomorrow.
