Hello, my father-in-law asked me to research the value of a few coins he collected. Hoping people here can help me estimate the value of these coins. Thanks in advance!

Many senior collectors here might help out.

But if you have time. You can visit your local library for borrowing some coin books and do your research. Or buy the coin book at book store.

That's what I do when started this hobby last year.

But never trust all the information in there (Prices) . Prices are different from the current market (which changes everyday).

Cheers

This post will likely get moved to Canadian Coins, Bank notes and Paper money by one of the admins, however, you could check out this site http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php to determine the approximate value. Good luck

Not a numismatist but here's my 2 cents worth

- The dime is worth only its weight in silver since it's quite damaged (so under $1)
- 1952-2002 50cent looks circulated as well, there are quite a few of these so it's not going to fetch more than face value
- The dollar and other 50cent are both specimen finish (right?) and base metals, and again not worth much more if at all above face.

Check out this web site for prices of circulation coins. It also includes a (partially complete) grading guide with example pictures to help get you in the ballpark.

From the pictures you show, the 1929 dime might be a VG8 and might sell for $1.75-$3. The 2002 50c is the Ascension variety with the Imperial State Crown portrait; $0.50-$1.50. If the 1972 nickel dollar is a proof (it looks frosted in the picture so might be) you might get $3-$5 for it. The 1988 50c maybe $0.50-$1.

If you follow BiBo's advice (and he's right on) you'll end up getting hooked on a fun hobby... one which will steal your time (suck up some of your dinero ) frustrate the heck out of you and give you a break from monotony , not to mention a spouse (absence makes the heart grow fonder is true ).
