I recently purchased this as part of a large wholesale lot of foreign coins and tokens. It appears to be roman, but I'm not too good at identifying ancient coins. Anyone know what it is exactly?
I tried to get rid of the verdigris by soaking it in verdicare, but three soaks did very little to remove it (just the verdigris free patches you see in the photo.

Theres no verdigris on the coin! your coin is fine and is already cleaned. I recommend leaving it alone or you'll lose more patina.

Can you read any letters? Its probably provincial and I'm no good with them (one day ill try and learn it all)

Nice Roman provincial coin. I believe the emperor is Severus Alexander. It has a very nice patina that shouldn't be removed.

I agree, nice patina, leave as is for sure.

Do you have any idea of the weight of this coin, it looks more like a sestertius than a provincial.

Maybe like one of these:

@ Benbyfield: Do you have a copy of Sear's
Greek Imperial Coins and Their Values?

In the front of this book, there is an extensive list of commonly found inscriptions that are seen on coins of this series. Careful reading of this list, and comparison to the legends found on the coins, often leads to identification of the coin under examination.

In this case, this coin does NOT have a Greek inscription, and Biancasdad is 'on the money'.

In most cases, the image of the Emperor is closer to the norm on Roman coins with Latin legends, than it is on Greek Imperial coins.

Just by 'eye' it is definitely a sesterius of Severus Alexander - Reverse appears to be VICTORIA AVGVSTI Sear #8022 Rome 231AD. Nice coin that 'might' be improved with a yearlong bath in distilled water. Worth about $25 as is

Sel - I have no books at all! I have heard good things of Sears - ill buy it if I see it, but I wont actively search it out. The web has served me well so far and the books often represent the price of a good hundred or so uncleaned coins.

Thanks for the info guys! It definitely appears to be Sear#8022. The designs and legends (what I can read of them) appear to match exactly.
See here for a better example for comparison
