These are a couple of coins I picked up locally a few months ago. Very rare for me to find this sort of thing in my neck of the woods. Just looking for opinions as to their grades. Hopefully my poor coin pic taking skills are good enough, I think I did ok on the 1/2 crown but not as good with the shilling. Thanks.

Well, I didn't want to be the first to put my head above the parapet, however, I think the half crown is better than VF. It's a suspiciously beautiful coin, I hope it's not a fake.

I think the shilling is F/GF; the reverse appears better than F - there's a good bit of detail on the crowns and the arms, though not nearly enough for VF.

I would hope it's legitimate. any tell tale signs that give these 1/2 crowns away? they both do look really nice though. what about values, my spink is about 5 years old so not sure what current valuations are, although they are probably similar I guess. thanks to everyone who has looked so far. more opinions are welcome too.

Hey. I agree with Pertinax that the grade is better than VF, and they rarely get seen so good. There's no digs or scratches that I can see, and there's so little wear to the hair or shield that I'd also be suspicious, but it looks like the real deal from here! It's Spink S.3435 (2nd reverse), and looks like the "no frosting" (inside the crown) variety. Values on coinsoftheuk can often be out of date, and directly copied from Spink anyway, although the values rooneydog stated are about the same as my Spink 2012. As Spink is only a guide, and anything of this age, size and grade pushes the value way up, I recommend looking at completed auction prices (try londoncoins.co.uk, realised prices, general search). The shilling looks like a £200 coin to me, and I reckon the halfcrown would be worth at least £800...most probably more. So I think if you paid less that $1000 for the pair (£650), you got a good deal

The purchase price on those was closer to the $400 range. And it included this florin and a hammered 1580 Liz penny, which is a little worn.
