Is this another classic case of a MDD? I only ask because the second "S" in STATES seems different to my untrained eye. I would appreciate any help.

Am I using the wrong terminology? If so, I apologize as I am still fairly new to this genre. What I am asking about is this: the second "S" in STATES and the tops of the letters "A,M,C,and A" in AMERICA seem to be double struck. Is this common? Thanks for your help.

What you are seeing is called Machine Doubling. It is very common It is flat and shelf like, whereas a true doubled die is the same as the device that is doubled. Also Machine Doubling takes away from from the device, whereas true doubled die add to the device.

MDD usually refers to Master Die Doubling, which is a common occurrence on years like 1972 and 1960. It is not a reference to Machine Doubling, which is what the coin in question has.
