Hi all,
I am new to the forum, yet have been collecting for
many years. I recently ran across a 42D Merc with a "Ghost 1" that shows up in between the 4 and the 2 but mainly right in front of the two. It shows when turned in the light a certain way, but cannot be seen when looking directly at the coin unless turned to a certain angle. The 1 starts at the coin rim and goes to about the middle (in height) of the 2. Anyone ever heard of this on the 42-D? I don't think I am looking at any scratches or wear patterns. It is plain as day every time I turn it a certain way, but I can't seem to get a good fix on it with a camera or I would post a pic.
Thanks.

I have never hear of such a variety but I am not anywhere near an expert on this particular coinage. I am sure someone will come along once they see this post who is more familiar with the series, oh yeah,Welcome To The Forum!!

Welcome to the forum !!

Is there any doubling visabable on any of the other numbers ? Particularly the 4 .

the 42-D 2 over 1 overdate is anything but bold ,, the 1 is usually very weak ,, can you get a good pic of the coin irregardless if it shows the anomoly or not ?

I tried again and this is the best pic I can get of it.
See the "1" laying up against the 2?

This looks like a pretty good capture of what I see. Sorry I couldn't make it any bigger, when I use my photo editor it adds Kb's to the pic anb I have to make it smaller to get it to post.

Hi Morganator

The pic quality is good but to small to really see the details .

If you have your picture hosted by Photobucket you can upload a bigger file and get the pic size up .

I'm surprised nobody has seen this before (responded).
Even at this small size I can see the 1.
I may take this up to Long Beach in June to see what
the experts up there say.

Morganator

Im not saying I cant see the the shape beside the 2 and I think it could be the 42/1 overdate but having to tip the coin just right to see it leaves a question in my mind , other things can cause anomolies on coins check this one out ,it was determined to be metal flow from striking .

So its not that no one has seen it and its not that I cant see something ,I just cant be sure with the size of the picture what I'm seeing .

taking it to the show for an in hand look is a great Idea , but dont leave us out now !! I gots to know !!

I suspect you have hit the nail on the head with ine too as I cannot see it straight on. But.... it is there, so I am hoping. I'll let you know what I find out.
