I was thinking, "what's the average value of one coin you dig up"? Like, you dig 4 quarters and 6 dimes for a total of $1.60 over 10 coins: the average value of each coin you found was 16 cents ($1.60 divided by 10). The goal was to find out how much higher the values would be for Canada by virtue of us having a circulating $1 and $2.

So, the average of all commonly used denominations in Canada is 57 cents ((1+5+10+25+100+200)/6), assuming equal mintages of everything. In America, it's 10 cents ((1+5+10+25)/4). Theoretically, you should find almost 6 times as much clad face value in Canada than in America.

Its difficult to say. If you go out and only find copper or modern mixed metal coins of 'copper' standard then the average is going to be very low, but if you turn up a few 2 pound coins, a couple of pound coins and a few older silver coins then its going to be a lot higher. Generally speaking I dont go on a value when I search, If I thought in terms of money then the 'hobby' would probably have made me about £10 a week with the odd bonus thrown in every now and again over the past years.

If you are thinking on terms of the average value of your finds for each hunt then metal detecting is not for you. In order to enjoy the hobby you must forget about find value and focus on the chase itself. I find mostly modern (including wheat cents)U.S. cents with a few higher denominations thrown in as well as an occasional piece silver or gold jewelry thrown in. If I feel like doing relic hunting for Revolutionary, War of 1812, or American Civil War items I just drive a mile or so down the road in any direction and stop at one of the many farms I have permission to hunt and go at it. I have a few items that I am told are somewhat valuable, but the items value means nothing to me, as I dig them so that I can preserve them, admire them, and ponder the history of them.

Totally agree Tim. If value played a part then you would be disappointed to uncover an old penny instead of the buzz we feel every time we find a coin ball!!
