Looking for some sage advise. Have hundreds of US type coins and Foreign to dispose of. This batch is worth a minimum of $75 per coin with some worth multiple thousands. For example say a PCGS MS62 97-O Morgan towards the higher end. I would guesstimate fifty to seventy five coins worth more than $500 and ten times that from $75 to $200.
I am interested in opinions in Stacks Vs HA or any other large draw auction site for this project. I have been posting pictures as I sort through this collection here on various boards if you want further examples of the breadth of coins.

For instance...todays finds....MS ++ 1931 Canada Nickel, 1927 British Cent MS63 ++, 1931 MJ Mexico 20C silver XF, 1897 Russian Ruble VF and a gorgeous 1839A German States Silber Groschen 30 einen thaler piece that if its not MS its an AU58 slider.Pictures of that will go up this weekend.

Now I dont think these are barn burners but they are nice coins that should find a home. Most of todays are towards the lower end of the prices mentioned above but there are some nice pieces there.

Anyone care to give me some direction? I'm in no rush...I'm enjoying cataloging and finding.

How close to a major numismatic auctioneer do you live?
It would be nice to negotiate with them in person.

I have been to Stacks in NYC (75 Miles away). He sent about 10 pieces to PCGS for me and he offered to come to town to review the collection as a whole. Its not that I am not confident in their service...not at all. Its more that I was wondering if their were opinions to be shared with regard to if one was better for Us vs Foreign or high end vs middle of the road stuff.

I would think that any leading numismatic auction house in the U.S. would have good specialist expertise in all areas of numismatics. They have a large enough staff to enable them to do so.
Their auction catalogs allude to that.
Perhaps because of their business prestige, their overall handling fees may be a little higher.

For medium priced coins, it is common practice for them to group a few together, to create a single lot. Large collections are often disposed of in this way.

If your collection is valued in the $tens of thousands, I would think that dealing with a major numismatic auction house is a safe way to go.
You could go with ebay with some of your coins, but you can't provide the guarantees that a major auction house can, because of their expertise to authenticate what they auction.

In your shoes, I'd lean towards timing rather than any specific house. Of the bunch, Heritage is the largest and might be assumed to have the broadest pool of potential buyers for any given auction. However, in this case I think I'd be aiming for the high-profile auctions scattered throughout the year, the ones associated with large coin shows and the like. These tend to rotate between the biggest auction houses.

If youre not in any rush to sell Id personally consider ebay for at least the lower valued pieces. While eBays fees did go up I believe theyre still below the fees an auction house would charge either you or a buyer fee that people will consider for their bids
