ebay put this on my home screen, as an example of "What's Hot":

(Offsite URL shortening not allowed-1) /ck6vpe3

Am I missing something? In a competitive auction (35 bids), someone bought a 12oz Panda for just over half of spot?

That is hot - but not in the way ebay wants me to think. Sure convinces me not to sell bullion in a competitive ebay auction!

Maybe makes me want to bid, though...

I assume what's hot is aimed at attracting buyers which in turn would increase average selling prices which would then attract sellers. Just a guess.

Most of the times, bullion sells for a decent price on ebay. But every once in a while, an auction will go less than spot. For a merchant with hundreds of auctions, a few lower auctions will not make any difference. But if you have just a couple of auctions, makes more sense to list it as 'buy it now' or in auction, start the auction at the minimum you want.
