Back in the day it used to be very very easy to tell a replacement note. All you had to look for was the asterix. Then in the bird series I think it was an "X" in the SN. Nowadays, with the newer bank notes, there is no easy way to see if what you have is a replacement.
Is there a way we can get them to bring back the asterix!?

Way too costly to produce replacement notes. The last set I saw produced a person had to remove the damaged note, take a single unnumbered note, set a one on number press to the serial number and print the note. Then insert the note back into position.

It is much cheaper to preprint a batch of notes and throw anyone in to place the the preprinted batch. If there are left overs they are just added to the end of the shipment.
