I have bought the Australian Opal Series http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalog...-series.aspx but I am disappointed in the quality of the opal. Even under good lighting, the play of color is minimal at best. Does anyone else have a similar impression of this series? I have some inexpensive "low grade" Australian Opal rough and also some finished cabochons from the same material (purchased years ago) and there's brightness and more play of color in this stuff than the highly touted Perth coin series. Why should I continue to pay a high premium for something that is not even appealing to look at?

I've never seen one of these coins "live" so I can't provide any firsthand comments re: the quality of the opal they contain, but... Quote: Why should I continue to pay a high premium for something that is not even appealing to look at? You shouldn't, you should collect what you enjoy. There's little sense in spending your hobby dollars on coins that do not appeal to you. I'd sell the coins and use the money on other coins that you will enjoy more.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I think now is a poor time to sell.

Unfortunately, I don't think the opportunity to sell is going to be much better in the future.
Good luck!

I have only the last coin - Kangaroo, but seen also the Wombat. Quote: Does anyone else have a similar impression of this series? Well, my impression the same, but regards Wombat only, the Kangaroo is more brighter. But despite of it, I didn't disappointed and started to look to buy also the Koala and the Wombat - in order to have a complete collection. Unfortunately, the ebay prices are higher, than I ready to pay for Koala...

I think it may come down to the particular opal used on that coin. I have a few of each and all look great.

Canada has diamonds in some coins and also Swarovskis in the snowflake, but Swarovskis don't count. What other mints have stones in the coins (and well-made ones)?

And how do they mint the opal coins without crushing them in the process? Must be set afterwards, ie, some handwork involved, plus carving each piece to fit. I dig the concept of handwork.

I just ordered one of these and noticed that it comes in a special presentation box with a little LED that shines on the coin when you open the box. I was wondering what the purpose was, but now I guess it's because the opal doesn't really, well, opalesce under natural lighting conditions...
