Just curious what people think about how long it takes to "discover" errors and varieties. Like if I get a bank roll of 2013 pennies, about how long should I wait to crack them open and not miss something? How long would you say it takes to safely be able to find documentation of MOST errors/varieties? I'm guess 2-3 years is probably a safe guess, but I'm a super newb so yeah, opinions?

If you are holding it to sell later then play it by ear. If you are going to search it for varieties the crack it now, any variety that's going to be in there in two years are in there now.Why not be the first to find it. Do your research, study, learn what to look for (in general). Then start looking, if you find anything that looks "different" post it here and we'll help you with it.

DrDon gave you good advise. Do your research on what to look for. There is quite a bit to take in. It all depends on how deep you want to get into the hobby. Start reading the posts in this section. Do not be afraid to read back as far as you can go. There are alot of topics on different varieties and errors that you will be reading for weeks if you like.

As stated...if you find something that does not look correct or normal. Post it here and I'm sure many members will help with your inquiries. Be sure to post pictures of the coins in questions. It is best if you can post clear pics of both the front and back of the coin. The larger the better but be sure to read the rules for posting pics to the site first. If you can include close-ups of the anomaly in question...that would be great as well. It would also be to your advantage to get an account at a site such as Photobucket.com to help with storing and uploading your pictures. You can also do certain adjustments to the pictures on such a site. There are also good/free photo editing software available for download. I use Photoscape and Paint.Net. Both work great and fairly easy to learn.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing your discoveries. :)

I was just thinking as a complete novice having a listing/pictures/etc of errors to look for would help me not miss anything. Definitely don't feel confident enough to find my own errors/varieties without some reference. Just curious how long people think it takes to "get the word out" about errors/varieties.

I posted a 1943 doubled die on this forum when I first started here.I found it over twenty years back. Mr. Daughtrey of coppercoins.com agreed it was a DDO.I have not seen any like listed anywhere. I might submit it someday. If it gets listed it would be atleast 70 years old.
