Much safer test, not using firearms:
Put a penny in a vise, stickytape a lead airgun pellet to it.
Put a 1/2" metal rod over the pellet and
'it the rod wif an 'ammer!

Don't know how to quote someone's post I'm sorry.

"I will do a test today with .22 the lead should form around the letters as lead will mould around thing on impact"

Please don't discharge a bullet into a coin Shane, it isn't possible to exclude all risk.
I really don't think it is the result of a bullet.
The dark colouring is more like a searing heat mark, so possibly a welder or oxy as someone else suggested.

I have images running through my head of people around the world walking down to the shed with a jar of coins they dislike and selection of their favourite firearms .... Mythbusters style ...

"Now, lets see if it was a .303 ...."

"Just conducting an experiment, dear! - It's all in the name of science!"

... that's right Tim. It's simple backyard shed jobs that have resulted in some amazing discoveries. Take for example the "splitting of the beer atom", that has added froth to our beer .

We Aussies are an inventive lot. Even if our "better halves" don't always approve

Yep.

Why do we have sheds in the back yard here in Oz?

'Cos they wont let us do it in the house .....

so the .22 is possible you can still see the letters ok they have been protected by the lead I don't think it was a .17 as I shatters on impact from 20 meters I love farm science labs

Well done ShaneW

I also like "backyard science experiments" . So in the light of this finding, I agree with trout1105 assessment. That the "ding" in darge's coin may have been caused by an airgun pellet.

Nice work!

Although, if it were Mythbusters, they'd being saying "OK - we know what it wasn't", and looking around for a pellet gun ....
