I aquired two 10mm platinum coins in a collection from the Franklin Mint. The certificate says they where "struck in pure platinum". I know very little about platinum and would like more information on these coins. So if anyone knows anything about these coins please post the information.

Here is the auction link:

the Franklin Mint is one of the older self minted coin company's out there. 10 mil is very little metal. it is paper thin or thinner and is worth maybe key word being maybe five cents to one dollar but not more. the value in metal is more than likely just a few cents.

garylcsr, I think you misunderstood DD. The medal(not a coin) is 10 millimeters in diameter, not a 10mil plating.

With that said, a 10mm medal is VERY small. For comparison, a $1 gold Indian Princess has a diameter of 14.3mm and total weight is 1.7g 90% gold. US Mint platinum Eagles are .9995 fine so I would think a pure platinum 10mm medal might weigh 1-1.2g. Based on $1325/oz spot, you would have ~$80-100 in platinum value between the two. This is strictly an educated guess but could differ dramatically based upon real weight of the medals. I would want an exact weight in grains or hundredths of a gram before I would bid on it- you just don't know how much platinum you are getting otherwise.

If your buying coins for fun and a hobby, no big thing. However, if for a future investment or resale, note many of the independant mints like that one have poor resale value except maybe on ebay where people buy anything.

just carl, I think you're misunderstanding me. This is my auction and I'm selling these coins. I'm sure they are pure platinum because it says struck in pure platinum, and they are small, very small! I'm going to add to the description because I never thought of the size factor.
Thanks for all the advice.

biokemist6, thanks for all the facts. Know I have a good refernce for platinum.
