Maybe this error is along the same lines as the posted error right before this, especially since it also involves a 1983 LMC. There is a bubble or blob underneath the "E" in LIBERTY and it runs slightly over the "B". The "E is clearly stuck on top of the anomaly and it appears to have smashed the bubble/blob down so that it covers the edge of the "B". Is there a name for this type of error or anomaly and what might cause it to happen? Any help would be appreciated.

If it's NOT a gas bubble it is what is called a BIE error. John1

Quote: is what is called a BIE error. John1 Wow! These WERE huge...for a minute. Quote: For a while BIE pennies became very popular and the BIE Guild was formed. Soon so many of these errors were found that the value went down and the collectors stopped tracking these coins. The BIE Guild dissolved and now unless the coin is proof or in excellent shape the premium for this error is low. "" from here.... http://coinedformoney.blogspot.com/...r-penny.html

I wouldn't rule out a gas bubble just yet. Could you get a better picture of the area in question?

I agree. Nobody dismissed it being a gas bubble. Only linked info for BIE's because it was mentioned.

I agree, the picture doesn't show the anomaly very well. I will work on it when I get of work this evening. By the way, are gas bubbles very common?

Gas bubbles are very common on the 1983's. The mint was still working out some plating issues with the copper coated zinc planchets at that time. Bubbles are pretty common throughout the 1980's. It's gotten better since then, but they still show up on newer issues.

It's a die chip. The term "BIE" error simply refers to the location of the die chip.
