The coin is a Sestertius and is brass. Based on condition I would estimate the value at $25.

I would say about $10. The method of cleanng, the advanced wear and the missing legend doesn't make it a strong coin.

That being said, some people love sestertii and I've seen them sell high.

I have ruined a sestertius by stripping its patina - give something shiny to show people if they ask about coins. Unbreakable too. Id use this as a nice example - Orichalcum (brass) is supposed to shine as if it were gold.

Desirable reverse SENAT(VS). The fact that someone 'carved' a J into it hurts. J is a modern letter ergo much more recent defacement. Personally I would spend closer to Bens estimate. But I am a cheapskate. Pretty coin though .... A bit of 'aging' couldn't hurt. Bury it in the flower pot for a year !

I don't have my books (sitting in the park I am) probably from the early part of the reign when Antoninus and the Senate were running a 'Mutual Admiration Society'. Hadrians reign had ended poorly with treason trials and executions. The Senate was so happy to have such a decent fellow sitting on the throne that they awarded him the honorific PIVS.

And being the alltime "Mr Niceguy" his coins tend to be oh so reasonably priced. I have more Antoninus Pius AE than any other Emperor ! Never pass up on a good bronze just because its cheap !
