Before the advent of numerical grades - which is just a typically-American way of finding even-finer granulation of differences which didn't matter before, based on a system that Sheldon created to define price and not condition - words like that were considered the accurate determination of grade. Since we've gone all-in with incremental numbers to describe the most minute differences between coins, those adjectives have become pretty much irrelevant because nobody uses them like an established system any more. Everybody uses them differently, and don't take them as meaning anything except whatever the person using them feels like they mean.
