A while back I bought a number of very low grade 2 Cents on ebay mainly because I thought I saw indicators for varieties I did not have.
For the most part I do quite well at this.
Most of the coins I buy are AG advertised as anything from Good to VF.
Anyway to shorten a long story somewhat. A few had no significant varieties or were ones I already had better examples of so I did something stupid.
I put them back on ebay. Only I said what they were "AG" even in AG a 2 Cent should go for around $5.
the three AG coins had 1 cent starts.
Good Pictures and an honest grade.
1 did not sell even at 1 Cent
1 sold for 1 Cent "Lucky ebay Newbie"
and 1 sold for $3.24 a little low but at least more than 1 person showed interest.

Had I advertised them as VG to VF I am sure they would have sold for $10 to $15 each.

I too have been tempted by the Dark Side, Luke. The Dark Side is very strong, and sometimes pays better. Even knowing you are doing the right thing is sometimes just not enough. So many melt value coins go for premium prices because of shady sales tactics while my better coins linger and sell for far less it makes me want to scream.

It's not much consolation, but at least you are not alone...

Richard, I know how frustrating it can be. I have been tempted on more than one occasion, too. It's simply not worth it for a couple of dollars, though. I'd rather have educated buyers who understand what they are getting and will remain loyal as customers. I hate it when someone buys something from us that they know nothing about. That can easily turn into a negative feedback (in fact that's one of the negatives we received). Keep doing it the right way. What goes around, comes around.

You know, I trust my grading skills. Do you know how many times I've been tempted to get a bunch of holders and call our coins certified by SBG or some other grading company. I wouldn't even be trying to overgrade coins, but it would be wrong of me to call a coin certified by me as I am certainly not a third party grading company. The grades would be conservative, but it is still wrong to misrepresent a certified coin (even though there are so many making a bundle of money on these types of coins... )

I sell coins on ebay, only to eliminate what I don't collect.
A better way to liquidate these coins is to wait until you have a
pile of them and sell them as a "collection". You will get a better price. Also, I grade them as I see it. I may not be the best grader, but I state in my auctions as I see it and if you don't agree with my grading, then your option is to not bid. I think this is fair as I am not an expert grader. I have heard that on average, unless the coin is certified, people generally bid one grade lower on most coins on ebay anyway. I am mainly just trying to make the money back I spent on the collection (which usually is not too hard to do), so I price them low to move them out the door. The people will decide what they are worth by their bidding. Just don't price them below what you can live with if they sell. I think anyone who has sold on ebay has done this at least once and learned their lesson the hard way. I had an off-set State Quarter error that only went for a few bucks when it was worth $50 or more. I was bummed too.

Also, try using something like craigslist.org to sell your coins.
You can meet people at a library, coffee shop, or a busy place if you feel like you don't want to give up your address (which I always do for the safety of my family and me). You can also say that you " inherited" your coins. This protects you from being targeted.
Just keep an eye on the buyer when you leave to make sure you are not follwed home or back to your car.
It's a little more risky, but it is another way to liquidate your coins if you don't want to get all wrapped up in the ebay/paypal/fee thing.

Thanks Morganator its been years since I looked at craigslist perhaps it may be another option. I am not really bummed about the sale prices on ebay I am just mad as hell that the wording of and add has so much influence on the outcome of an auction. ebay is not a place where people buy the coin, they buy the add......

I discovered https://www.auctiva.com
You can post up to 16 pics for free and schedule
your auctions to list at a certain time (also for free).
Don't give ebay all your money. Use this site. It's awesome.
You still pay fees for listing, but you won't pay picture fees or scheduling fees!
