Hi,

I have three 1939 royal visit tokens in different sizes.
I read the article that states there was a 25mm version, a 38mm version and a 77mm version (quoted below).
I have a 25mm bronze version, but my other bronze one is 30.80mm. My silver version which measures 32.32mm.
Could the 38mm in the article be a misprint or is there one that size floating around out there too? How many sizes did they make of this thing anyways? Seems like a lot of dies for one medallion.

Quote:
"To commemorate the visit, the Royal Canadian Mint struck three series of commemorative medallions: 77 mm presentation medals in gold, silver and tombac, 38 mm bronze and silver medallions for sale to the public (see above), and a 25 mm bronze medallion which was distributed to Canadian school children. The Obverse featuring the conjoined profiles of George VI and Elizabeth was designed by Percy Metcalf and was also used on the 1937 British Coronation Medal. The reverse, designed by Emanuel Hahn, shows a map of Canada and the route followed by the royal couple during their visit."

I believe the article's reference to a size of 38mm was an error; no references I have mention a Royal Visit medal of that size.

The "large size" bronze and silver medals in my collection are the same size as yours; the two (bronze and silver) are not the same size. I believe your (and my) medals are of the standard/official size.

In case you were unaware, a total of 183,000 of the silver medals were minted; they sold for 50 cents each. A total of 417,000 bronze medals were struck, they were sold for 10 cents each.

According to Striking Impressions, by James A Haxby there were only the large size bronze and the silver which were sold to the general public at post offices at 10¢ and 50¢ respectively. The smaller bronze was given to school children.
