A very interesting tidbit that I read regarding President John Adams:
Adams, the 2nd President, & Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President, had been political rivals. They had rekindled their friendship through correspondence after they both had left the presidency. Adams vowed to survive until the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
At the age of 92 (some say 90), on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1826, he died in Quincy, Mass. Before he died, he whispered his last words: "Thomas Jefferson survives." Adams was unaware that Jefferson, his great political rival — and later friend and correspondent — had ironically died a few hours earlier on that very same day at Monticello.
