This came in a Lot I won, a week ago.
There was no way of identifying the type of Antoninianus it was, of which Emperor, and so it needed cleaning.
It took two days to clean, left to soak in a small jar of Distilled Vinegar and a pinch of Sea Salt.
Normally a nice Dressing for Chips (Fries)
After all the encrusted crud was cleaned off, it is now identifiable as a "Post-Reform Radiate" of the Emperor Diocletian, the "CONCORDIA MILITVM" type.
2.33 g, 20.6 mm

Nice cleaning job - I always fear to use salt and acid - it feels like playing chicken with fate.

Nice cleaning job, Masis! I've never heard of distilled vinegar though -- what is it? Do you buy it as is or make it up yourself? And how much sea salt do you add to it? I've got a few crusty slugs that I'd love to clean up enough to identify. Also, do you have to neutralize your solution after cleaning the coin in a special way or just wash with water? Thanks in advance for your input!

Sorry for the delay folks.
In answer to a question on what is Distilled Vinegar:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinega...lled_vinegar
The alternate name for it is "White Vinegar".

The jar I used is a small, 30 ml capacity.

The Sea Salt is in chunky granules, about 5 mm in size, for this I used 3 granules.

I won;t try to clean that blob of corroded metal in the centre of the obverse, likely it will "ping" off and leave an awful gash in the centre.

Accept when to stop cleaning.

Finally I waxed it, using a jar of Royal Bees Wax.

Never had a "Post Reform Radiate" of Diocletian before, had a few for his collegue, Maximian.
I guess that as Diocletian is a popular emperor to collect, the coins get snapped up.

Thanks, Masis, I appreciate the information. I'll let you know how my own efforts turn out.
