Civil War 150th Anniversary Commemorative Coins
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am considering purchasing the Civil War 150th Anniversary Commemorative Coins from http://civilwar.eparks.com/store/ According to an article, I believe from the National Park, it is the "official" coin collection.
However, I am NOT a coin collector but would like to ask two very important questions.
1. Is this the correct or official coin collection that Coin Communities recognize as the official coin)s) of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil war? Or is it something else?

2. Is a Coin Collection like this worth anything in the future or are they like the Franklin Mint Plate Collection...a waste of money?

The collection set is $300 and I am NOT looking to make a profit on it. But I also don't want the set to be totally worthless. Your thoughts are very welcomed.
I have read the online rules briefly and it does not indicate if such inquiries are prohibited. Please advise me if I have stepped out of line.

Bets Regards,

Joshua Lowe

PS: I wanted to find and included the article on "official" coin but could not retrieve it.

The US Mint is NOT scheduled to mint any Civil War commemorative coins. What you see for sale on that website are not coins at all, just overpriced privately minted medallions. However, you may be interested in three coins that were minted in 1995- The Civil War Battlefield commemoratives are available as a Cupronickel Half Dollar, a Silver Dollar, and a Gold $5.

I'm familiar with these particular pieces, I've been picking them up as I've visited Civil War battlefields over the last year or so.

A few things you should know:
  • Most importantly, they are not US coins (or coins from any other country) they are privately-struck commemorative medals. They are reasonably attractive, but their design quality does not compare favorably to any US coin. They are marked as "Designed and finished in the USA" but my understanding is that the medal itself is struck outside the US. It's unfortunate that these pieces are called "coins" but the non-collecting public identifies with the word "coin" much more so than it does with "medal" â€" in other words, calling it a "coin" makes it easier to sell.

  • The "Official" title is another marketing device. I will say, however, that they are the only Civil War 150th anniversary medals I've seen for sale at the National Parks I've visited thus far â€" I suppose that gives them some sort of "Official" status.

  • I have been buying the medals as souvenirs of my visits to the various battlefields (and plan to continue to do so). I have absolutely NOT been buying them as any sort of investment. I do not believe they will be worth any significant premium in the future. In fact, my guess is that within a few years they will available for less on the secondary market than their current selling price. I don't see them becoming a sought-after collectible.

I don't mean to discourage you or your collecting of the set if it interests you, I just want to make sure you fully understand what you would be buying.

I've included a scan of one of the medals to give you a sense of how they are packaged for individual sale.

commems, the depth of your knowledge knows no bounds.

I started to research this, but opted to wait for your inevitable post. You did not disappoint.

I wanted to thank everyone for their advice.
The response time to my questions was near instantaneously, a rarity in today's environment. This is obviously a vibrant community.
I believe I have the information needed to make an informed decision.
The background to my questions was based on the following:
I live in Manassas, VA and went to the Manassas Battleground 150th year event a couple of years ago (time flies) and received a coin (non-painted I think but my memory fails me, my father has it) as a volunteer. So I thought of going to other events this year and thought of the coin and possibly purchasing other coins or a set. I missed last year's events (very busy).

Bravo to those who have attended our (Americans) historical events.

Gettysburg July 4th 150th Commemorative event this year and I am going.
